16th Rifle Brigade of 117 Brigade, 39th Division, arrived in France in March 1916 and the following month 39th Division took over the sector of trenches at Givenchy and Festubert in the First Army area. On 1st May, 1916, 16th Rifle Brigade moved into the front line in the Festubert sub sector. On 3rd May there was some sporadic shelling of their trenches in the morning and the Working Party that were out that night, attracted some machine gun fire. During the course of the day 3 men were killed or died of wounds, one of them being Henry Pisani.
